What is a cleanroom?
A Cleanroom is defined in by Standards Australia in AS ISO 14644.1:2017 as a “room in which the concentration of airborne particles is controlled, and which is constructed and used in a manner to minimize the introduction, generation, and retention of particles inside the room, and in which other relevant parameters, e.g. temperature, humidity, and pressure, are controlled as necessary”.
What is a controlled environment?
A controlled or critical environment is a space where specific conditions such as humidity, temperature and air quality are maintained at particular levels to ensure optimal conditions for the processes.
What is the difference between a controlled environment and a cleanroom?
A controlled environment is one in which conditions such as temperature and humidity are regulated. A cleanroom is a specialised form of controlled environment that additionally maintains strict controls on airborne particles and other contaminants.
What is a containment room?
A containment room is a specialised space, designed to prevent the escape of specific materials into the general environment. The air pressure inside a containment room is lower than in other rooms. The negative pressure inside the room prevents the air from escaping into the outside environment.
Who uses cleanrooms?
They are used in most industries where small particles can affect manufacturing. These include industries such as aerospace, biotech, pharmaceutical, medical, critical processing manufacturing, fibre optics, military and many more.

What types of cleanrooms are there?
- Cleanrooms vary ranging from difference sizes, complexity, and classifications of ISO Class 1 – 9.
- Soft Wall Cleanrooms – Flexible and practical approach to portable cleanrooms.
- Hard Wall Cleanrooms – Have a rigid and stable outer casing for a more permanent fixed facility.
- Modular Cleanrooms – Durable and rigid which can be built in existing space.
Cleanroom classifications
Cleanrooms are classified by how clean the air is based on a number of airborne particles of a certain size per cubic metre. The "cleanest" cleanroom is a class 1 and the "dirtiest" a class 9.
